What should I eat?

It is more complicated than ever to decipher what we should be eating to support our health and planet. But it doesn’t have to be! When you sift through all of the nonsense being delivered by mainstream media it all comes down to one thing – eat real food and Michael Pollan certainly said it best:

Eat food, not too much, mostly plants

Let’s break that down a bit.

Eat food: Eat real whole foods, without an ingredient list. Plants that have been grown in a way that supports the soil, our water, our pollinators and our biodiversity. Animals that have been raised in a way that nourishes them and the land they live on.

Not too much: This one is pretty self explanatory and a lot easier to do if you are able to sit at a table to enjoy your meal.

Mostly plants: Grains, fruit, vegetables, legumes, fill your plate with these foods, and when it comes to meat, dairy and fish, invest in your health and future of the planet by thinking about quality over quantity.

And I would like to add one last one, eat with someone you care about (even if that’s just yourself!) without distractions. How many times have you shovelled down your lunch only to look up from your phone to realize that it’s gone and you can’t even remember what it tasted like? Food is meant to be enjoyed, yet we rarely take the time to appreciate it and all of the hard work that went into getting that food from the earth to our plates.
