Rootabaga – February 3, 2019

Well it looks like we’re in for another 6 weeks of winter according to Shubenacadie Sam! But don’t worry we’ve got some amazing farmers in Nova Scotia growing things like cucumbers to keep us sane through these winter months. Speaking of which, this weeks subscription includes,  you guessed it, an English cucumber! We are also adding a little extra colour to your subscription this week with daikon and watermelon radish as well as napa cabbage. I’ve actually never cooked with these myself, so I’ll be sharing a few recipes I found online this week for inspiration.

This week’s subscription includes:

English Cucumber – Greenhouse Grown by den Haan Greenhouses in Lawrencetown, NS
McIntosh Apples – Certified Organic, grown by Taproot Farm in Port Williams, NS
Sweet Potatoes – Grown spray free at Elmridge Farm in Centreville, NS
Parsley Root* – Grown spray free at Elmridge Farm in Centreville, NS
Napa Cabbage – Certified Organic, grown by Taproot Farm in Port Williams, NS
Onions – Grown spray free at Elmridge Farm in Centreville, NS (small subscription) or Certified Organic, grown by Taproot Farm in Port Williams, NS (large subscription)
Beets – Grown spray free at Elmridge Farm in Centreville, NS
Kohlrabi* – Certified Organic, grown by Taproot Farm in Port Williams, NS
Daikon & Watermelon Radish – Grown spray free at Hutten Family Farm in Lakeville, NS

*Included in large subscription

Meal Plan – February 3 to 10

Sunday Sesame Soy Napa Cabbage Slaw (I’ve never tried this recipe, but it looks good!) with Pork Spare Ribs & Rice
Monday Fried Eggs with Sweet Potato Home-fries
Tuesday Thai tofu stir-fry with Daikon Radish, Carrot, Onion and Napa Cabbage
Wednesday Chicken Thighs with Roasted Beets & Feta
Thursday Roasted Kohlrabi with sausages and sauerkraut
Friday Pizza Night!
